2007 Guests - June - August

SA109: 16 Aug 07 - Fear & Boredom in Los Angeles
What with all the talk of Siggraph 07... and even 08... it seemed like long overdue time to reach into the how-did-we-manage-to-never-broadcast-this-one bag and pull out this truly inspiring Siggraph 2004 Los Angeles interview with Princeton University professor of computer science and of music, Perry Cook (who happened to be on a Guggenheim fellowship that year and working on his book about the history of technology and the expressive voice)

Computer music; new instruments; new controllers; expression; mapping; machines replacing bad musicians - machines enhancing great musicians; the famous story about his grad student who determined that he liked music that made him 60% bored and 40% afraid (boredom & fear to him... pattern & variation to you... an amazing contemplation about not only the structure of music, but also art and life to me...)

SA108: 09 Aug 07 - Siggraph 2007
Yet another trip to the San Diego Convention Center, this time for Siggraph 07 - the 34th annual meeting of the Special Interest Group on Graphics. I'm sure 34 years ago it may have been a "special interest group," but these days Siggraph is more like an ecology... a city... a way of life...

In San Diego Strange Angels visits with Jacquelyn Martino, the conference chair for next year's Siggraph 2008 in Los Angeles, and also with Amy & Jackie Morie - Jackie's at her 23rd straight Siggraph, and her daughter Amy who's been coming for about a dozen years has been a fixture at The Studio / Guerrilla Studio for the past 10 years.

BP03 / SA107 - Julie Adler

A while back Amy Knoles, Martin Herman, and I produced a couple of hours of radio for American Public Media. The show was called Border Patrol and our mission was to Patrol the Borders of New Music. We recorded a bunch of amazing interviews with Michael Gordon, Eve Beglarian, and Joshua Fried in NYC; Eric Singer of NYC at the opening of his show at the UCI Beall Center; Don Davis in his amazing Topanga Canyon "home studio;" and down in San Diego we chatted with Trummerflora music collective members Hans Fjellestad, Ellen Weller, Marcos Fernandes, and Nathan Hubbard. Out in Valencia we visited with Lucky Mosko and Jim Tenney, both of whom are, sadly, no longer with us. Curtis Roads from UCSB and Tod Machover from MIT were next on our list... but we didn't get (haven't gotten) that far.

One amazing interview Martin and I recorded was in the Silverlake home of Julie Adler. I think Julie's been eclectic since before I even knew what the word meant. Here, at last, is this marvelous conversation on art, life, spirituality, and beyond.

Whispering at the Disco

Killer broadcast this week: Wednesday 11 October, 9am: The Vooms and Carrie Yury. The Vooms are a new wave / indie / disco group. They'll perform live and talk about their work. Composer/Vocalist/Programmer/Mastermind Marcie Patman will be joined by Dan Epand on Drums and Ivan on guitar. Big sound. Big fun. Big drums. Boom boom.

Carrie is an amazing sound artist. She's done a couple of pieces where she hides speakers in trees and as you walk down the sidewalk you hear her whispering. In one piece she whispered names of desserts. In another she whispered her friends body parts that the friends had always secretly felt were too big or too small or too something. She's got a new music CD coming out in 2007, she's going to preview one of the tracks... and, just for us she's agreed to do a special whispered version! Start putting those speakers and blasters in your trees!
